25 Years of CARD/1 in the field

In the district of Traunstein a complex amphibian guidance system has been integrated into the planned walking and bicycle track project alongside an important road between Bergen and Staudach. The construction serves to improve traffic conditions and protect the local ecological system.

Traunstein is not only the largest district in Bavaria but it is also one of the richest in biotopes. The amphibian migration containing the largest number of individuals in the whole of Bavaria can be found along the TS 5 (a principal road). Between 16,000 and 26,000 animals cross the road each year. The new guidance system connects up the biotopes and provides sustainable protection. 

The facility comprises 800m-long guidance systems running parallel to the road. This stops the animals from crossing the road. Instead, they are steered into one of eight tunnels which cross under the road. Some of these tunnels were built askew to allow for the animals' migration patterns. The tunnels themselves were constructed using pre-fabricated steel/concrete sections while the entrance/exits are made up of large paving stones.

The engineers and technicians of Ingenieurbüro Fendt used CARD/1 for the complete project, from surveying to planning to construction.
